Police in Makurdi, Benue State capital, Thursday last week discovered an amputated human leg wrapped in a carton along Moses Shaaji Street, Logo 2, Makurdi.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ezeala, told newsmen that the carton, containing the leg, might have been dropped in the early hours of the day by unknown persons.
Ezeala said he suspected that the act might have been carried out in the area by cult groups for ritual purposes and assured that the police were already investigating the matter to unearth those responsible for it.
He appealed to the members of the public to give information to the police to enable it unravel the culprits and bring them to book.
Some of the eyewitnesses that spoke with Nigerian Pilot Saturday at the scene of the incident, said the discovery of the carton generated fear in the neighborhood, as some had suspected that the content of the carton might be a bomb planted by terrorists to kill people, while a few others thought it was another case of an abandoned baby.
Mr Jacob Terna, resident, lamented the horrifying sight of the leg concealed in the carton and appealed to fear God, saying ‘life is sacred’.
Another resident, Miss Joy Audu, said it was curiosity that led to the discovery of the content of the carton and the subsequent notification of the police.
Logo 2 area of Makurdi is known for strange and bizarre incidences most of which in recent past were occasioned by cult activities.
