Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, NIS, Imo State Branch, has sent strong warning signals to land owners in the state to beware of the activities of prowling quacks in land survey practice in the state.
In a statement jointly issued yesterday in Owerri by the state chairman NIS Surv. Emma Duru, and state chairman of Association of Practising Surveyors, Imo State, Surv. Joe Ogbue, the group declared its resolve to combat quackery in the profession.
The statement with the theme, “Combating Quackery in Land Survey Practice in Imo State”, disclosed that the surveyors had resolved to introduce a customised paper for printing of property survey plans, as a means to check quackery.
Duru and Ogbue explained that the institution were disturbed by the activities of quacks and therefore chose to inform unwary public about the antics and devices of quacks in the profession of surveying.
They expressed dismay that the quacks deceitfully provide the public with poorly and badly produced survey plans, without their knowing, thereby creating room for occasional property loss occasioned by poor survey plans.
Duru described survey quacks as those who undertake production of survey plans without being properly qualified and authorised by law to do so.
He said such plans do not satisfy the necessary accuracy requirements and some other standards, and therefore makes them invalid and unacceptable for any legal transactions that require on attachment of a survey plan.
He further stated that the quacks in recent time have resorted to forging signatures of surveyors on fake survey plans , utilization of illegitimate beacon numbers , as well as illegal things such as backdating of survey plans.
