Supporters of Taraba State Acting Governor, Alhaji Garba Umar and those of Chief David Sabo Kente, his major opponent in the build-up to 2015 governorship election have clashed with several of them wounded.

An eyewitness of the incident told Nigerian Pilot that the clash was at the Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi, venue of the North East zone of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP rally where President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was in attendance at the weekend.

It was gathered that officials of the Taraba State government and other PDP chieftains went to Bauchi to participate in the event where supporters of Kente were chanting solidarity songs to sell Kente’s candidature to the people.

Angered by the development, supporters of the Acting Governor allegedly descended on them and destroyed their flags and banners and also wounded some of them.

When reached for comments, the media aide to Kente, Mr. Livinus Kaior, described the incident as “barbaric, criminal and unwarranted”, insisting that there was no basis for the clash. He urged the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, to bring the perpetrators to book.

He quoted his boss as urging the people to put the sad event behind them and consider the state as their priority and work towards its progress.

The Special Assistant to the Acting Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Aaron Aritmas, told Nigerian Pilot that nothing like that took place at the rally.

According to him, there were no branded vehicles of Kente or his supporters at the rally, saying that only Umar had his supporters at the event.
