To check the activities of illegal refiners of crude, the Nigerian Navy has arrested three suspects in Ikot Abasi local government area of Akwa Ibom State over possession and theft of 250 litres of crude.
Commanding Officer of the NNS Jubilee, Ikot Abasi, Commodore Joel Ogazi, disclosed this to newsmen yesterday, when he paraded the suspects.
According to him, the suspects, Machi Nicholas, Paul Nelson and Sunday Marcus were arrested at UAC Beach in Ikot Abasi in relation to crude oil theft and illegal refining of the product.
Some of the items recovered from the suspects included 19 drums containing 250 litres of the refined product with another eight drums of illegally refined diesel. “We also recovered 34 gallons of 50 litres, with 16 gallons of illegally refined diesel from the suspects”, Ogazi said.
He promised that his command would see the end of all illegal refineries and the activities of the illegal bunkers in the state just as his predecessor fought against such activities.
While handing over the suspects to the state command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Ogazi stressed that there would be no escape route for illegal oil bunkers in the state.
The commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Pedro Idada, who was represented by his deputy, Ogumike Jamhill, promised to ensure a thorough investigation of the matter.
