Most residents of Calabar, Cross River State capital have fled their homes as a result of flood.
Several houses in the city were submerged by the rampaging flood caused by heavy downpour.
The Monday night rains also damaged property worth millions of Naira with the victims rendered homeless.
Areas affected by flood included Otop Abasi, Ediba, some areas of the state housing estate and the federal low cost housing estate.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, office at the federal Housing estate in Calabar was completely submerged.
NAN correspondent in the state, Mr. Dianabasi Effiong told Nigerian Pilot that several office equipment were damaged by flood.
Mr. Emeka Eze, whose shop was also submerged, appealed to the state government to save residents of the area further losses by opening up channels in the area as the rains intensifies.
He told Nigeria Pilot that the major problem they were facing was the poor drainage system, which results in flooding whenever it rains.
A resident of the federal housing estate, Dr. Vincent Ogbeche, whose residence was also affected appealed to relevant government agencies to save residents of the area.
Dr. Ogbeche disclosed that the area is always flooded, when it rains due to the deplorable state of roads and poor drainage system.
He disclosed that ‘new buildings are springing up in the area and the drains no longer able to contain the increasing water volume with the area flooded whenever it rains’.
