Academic activities in public primary and secondary schools have commenced following the resumption of duties by teachers.
Teachers in the state had refused to return to work following the non-provision of EBOLA protective kits in schools by the state government.
The state wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, had directed teachers in public schools not to return to work until the necessary preventive kits were provided.
As a result of the refusal of the teachers to resume duties, students had to spend additional weeks at home.
The state NUT chairman, Comrade Eyo Nsa-Itam told Nigerian Pilot that they had to suspend the action following the provision of the required kits in schools across the state.
Eyo-Itam said it was the responsibility of the union to protect its members as well as the children, adding that “that is why the union insisted that the kits be provided before we resume duties.”
Parents in the state have therefore commended NUT for insisting on the provision of protective kits before resumption.
A parent, Mr. David Moses said the union’s decision not to return to work until the schools were well protected was commendable.
