Vice Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Professor Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba has restated the commitment of his administration to improving the educational and infrastructural standard of the university, for it to attain a global standard which is the vision of its founding fathers.
Prof. Ozumba gave this assurance while briefing newsmen yesterday on activities scheduled to mark the 54th anniversary of the institution, stating that though much work had been done by his predecessors towards achieving the goals of lifting UNN to international standard, a lot more still needed to be done.
He said, “My overall agenda is to provide the University of Nigeria the leadership needed to become an academic giant and pacesetter in the quality of its scientific research, the level of its innovative teachings and the robustness of its community service among universities in the developing countries.”
He commended UNN for remaining one of the leading research institutions in the country with the best equipped library, and having presently developed a cassava processing equipment and researchers who are delving in several other areas of human endeavour.
He stressed that his administration is also working hard to ensure improved welfare for both staff and students of the institution through prompt payment of monthly salaries for both lecturers and other members of staff of the university.
For the students, Prof Ozulumba said he was working hard to improve on the hostel facilities in both campuses of university at Nsukka and Enugu.
He averred that in as much as he had restored steady flow of pipe borne water at UNEC, he would equip the students hostels with washing machines, as obtained in foreign universities, so they would have no reason to wash their clothes with bare hands any more.
