Bursary for students geared towards acquiring skills – Bayelsa Speaker

Speaker, Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Konbowei Friday Benson said his bursary programme for students in tertiary institutions across the country from Southern Ijaw constituency 4, is intended to ensure that more young people gain skills and qualifications that would give them sustainable jobs.
The Speaker maintained that “individuals and the state derive economic benefits from investing in people”, reiterating that, the best gift to young people, is to give them opportunity to be educated by providing support for them to go to school.
Rt. Hon. Friday Benson, who made the remark during the presentation of bursary awards to eighty two second batch students from his constituency, at the State House of Assembly Complex-Yenagoa, on Thursday, 27 November 2014, encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the token of forty thousand naira, given to them.
He said the bursary scheme was his own contribution to the socio-economic development of the constituency, informing that he would ensure that young people from the area have the tools and opportunities they need to fulfill their potentials, regardless of their background, or life circumstances.
He commended the state governor, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson for declaring a state-of-emergency on the education sector, pointing out that the proactive policies of the restoration administration has provided quality options for young people to undertake both academic and vocational programmes.
According to the Speaker, the various institutions established through bills passed by the state legislature under the present administration are to ensure that Bayelsa youths have the tools and opportunities they need to fulfill their potentials, regardless of background or life circumstances.
The Speaker said the Governor Dickson-led restoration government believes that all young people should have access to local, national and international opportunities to develop their skills for life and work, with a view to creating a more responsible and cohesive society.
