Eggon youths in Nasarawa state have said that a total of 395 of their kinsmen were killed by Fulani insurgents in the ongoing crises in the state while 75 sustained various degrees of injuries within the last three years.
Spokesman of the youth, Baba Ayiwulu, who disclosed this at a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists,NUJ Press Centre in Lafia, the state capital at the weekend, maintained that not less than 1,435 Eggon houses have also been razed down in over 111 towns, villages and communities during the invasions on the Eggon nationality, forcing many families to desert their homes and seek refuge in safer places across Nigeria.
“We are constrained to add that, should the governor of Nasarawa state, who by allegiance of oath of office, promised not to allow his personal interest prevail in the running of the state, and who also swore to protect the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, choose to ride on his personal interest to the detriment of his office functions, then, it’s unfortunate,” the statement added.
He accused the governor, Tanko Al-Makura , of using the state resources to import mercenaries into the state for his selfish interest aimed at wiping out the Eggon nation in the state.
“We therefore call on President Goodluck Jonathan, who is not only the chief security officer of the country, but the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to urgently order the deployment of troops to comb these mercenaries who are camped at Wamba, Awe and Obi local government areas, and Kwandere from visiting more havoc on innocent Nigerians, particularly of the Eggon ethnic nationality.
“As the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, commences the distribution of Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs in Nasarawa State, we call on INEC to ensure that the displaced persons are properly organized and issued their PVCs to avoid being disenfranchised, ”the statement added.
Ayiwulu appealed to the Eggon youths to channel their energies towards productive ventures, noting that any destruction wreaked on the society is destruction on the future of the youths.
