Jonathan’s impeachment plot ill-timed – NUJ President

Following the moves by the National Assembly members to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Malam Garba Muhammad has said the plot is ill-timed.
In his words, “As far as I’m concerned, the political situation could not warrant that because the tension is already high.”
The NUJ President who stated this yesterday while addressing a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalist, NUJ Kaduna State Council secretariat, described the collection of signatories of the members to impeach Mr. President as ill-timed and uncalled for, particularly that the nation is currently under tension.
According to him, “For people to start appending their signatures for the impeachment of Mr. President is not wise, because as far as I’m concerned, the political situation does not warrant that.
“The tension is already high. So I think we should be thinking of adding value to our polity rather than creating problem like this,” he said.
Malam Muhammed also expressed worry with the fracas at the National Assembly between the members and the police, saying there should be mutual understanding and respect for both.
“Issue of Tambuwwal is unfortunate. There is no need for that. It is uncalled for. A lot of people have condemned it. The Speaker must be respected. The Inspector General of Police too should be respected. It’s and vice versa. There should be mutual understanding and respect for both.”
The NUJ President said democracy has been bastardized because most parties embraced the idea of consensus candidates and denying the people the right to participate in the selection of their leaders.
While lamenting the deteriorating state of insecurity in the country, Malam Muhammad said Nigeria is gradually turning into Somalia, looking at the number of the killings in the South West, North East, which is gradually creeping into the North Central and North West.
“There is no part of the country that is not affected in terms of security challenges, apart from the insurgency,” he said.
