Inter Milan have beaten Liverpool in the race to sign Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri, according to reports in Italy.
The Merseysiders had been in discussions with the 23-year-old’s representatives over a deal to bring the talented midfielder to Anfield, but the Nerazzurri have agreed terms with Bayern.
The news comes as a blow for Brendan Rodgers’ side as the Reds had identified the Swiss international as the man to kick-start their below-par Premier League season.
And now, according to Sportitalia, Shaqiri will join Inter on loan during the January transfer window with a view to making the move permanent at the end of the season for a fee in the region of £12m.
Inter boss Roberto Mancini believes Shaqiri can strengthen his team’s bid to challenge for the Serie A title and could complete the deal to sign the winger this week.
The former Basel star, who joined the German giants in 2012 for £10m, has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth under boss Pep Guardiola – although Shaqiri has struck two goals in 14 appearances this term.
