No fewer than 104 drug traffickers were sentenced to various jail terms in Katsina State.
The State Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Mrs Maryam Gambo Sani revealed this while briefing newsmen in Katsina on Tuesday.
Mrs. Gambo explained that currently about 64 drug traffickers are waiting trial at Federal High Court Katsina.
She said the Agency arrested 604 drug traffickers out of which 17 were females while 58 of them were males.
Mrs. Gambo further said the Agency counselled 576 persons who were found to be drug users. Out of the number, 68 were admitted into rehabilitation centres and were treated and discharged.
She expressed concern that young children and girls were involved in drug abuse in the state and called on the parents to complement the Agency’s effort in addressing the problem.
“We are concerned about widespread abuses of other psychotropic substances like rubber solution, nail polish cleaner, lizard dung, petrol, the abuse of cough syrup with codeine content, and several other untested pharmaceutical products,”she said.
While reviewing the activities of the Agency, Mrs Gambo said a total of 782.926 Kg of Cannabis and psychotropic substances were seized within the period.
Mrs Gambo said the Agency has made a breakthrough with the re-arrest of a notorious drug dealer, Ibrahim Matsai, an indigene of Kaita local government in Katsina State.
The Commandant explained that the drug dealer who was on wanted list of the agency was among drug dealers currently standing trial before a Federal High Court in Katsina.
She said a landmark achievement recorded by Agency within the year 2014 was the burning/destruction of over N6, 795.213 kg of both cannabis sativa and psychotropic substances value over N700 Million.
Mrs. Gambo commended security agencies, NGOs and state government for the assistance to NDLEA in the state, which enabled it to successfully carry out it activities without hitches.
