After encouraging the Taraba farmers to grow cotton with the promise of encouraging sales, over 1000 tonnes of cotton produced by farmers last year are laying waste in the state, Managing Director, Supernova global investment, Sani Marke has disclosed.
Marke who made this disclosure yesterday in Jalingo while interacting with journalists lamented that the price of the commodity was low in the market and discouraging.
The MD informed that farmers in the state had to key into cotton production and his company supported them to take to cotton production, following federal government decision to support cotton farmers in the country.
Explaining further Marke revealed that farmers invested in the cultivation of cotton in state across six local government areas of Jalingo, Lau, Karim Lamido, Ardo Kola and Gassol and were supported by his company through the provision of inputs such as seedlings, fertilizers and herbicides.
He lamented that after the farmers harvested over 1000 tonnes of cotton, they could not sell because of poor price of the commodity in the market.
A kilogram of cotton now, according to Marke goes for as low as N50 and called on the federal government to buy off the commodity from the farmers to encourage them so as to continue in the business.
If such steps are not taken, the MD emphasised it would discourage farmers from going into cotton production any longer.
