The Bar Association, NBA, in Edo State yesterday threatened legal action against the state governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, for continued disobedience of court order affirming the constitutional provision for financial autonomy for the judicial arm of government.
The NBA, which said it would be asking for monetary damages from the governor for mortgaging the means of livelihood of members, also said this move had become necessary as the welfare and domestic economy of lawyers in the state were in crisis.
The lawyers also asked the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, as well as the Solicitor-General of the state, to resign their appointments with immediate effect, since they had failed “to properly advise the governor” on the need to obey the court order affirming financial autonomy for the judiciary in the state.
Mrs Patience Iyomon, chairman of the state branch of the NBA while leading other lawyers on protests along major streets in Benin City, said the governor’s attitude violated the rule of law while the judicial officials’ continued stay in office was a disgrace to the Bar.
“The NBA Benin branch condemns the continued refusal of the state government to comply with the court judgement, as there cannot be a true democracy without an impartial and independent judiciary.”
