Minister of Environment, Mrs.
Hadiza Ibrahim Mailafia has unveiled
opportunities for wealth generation
and private sector participation in the
environment sector.
A statement issued by deputy director on
Press and Public Relations in the ministry
and made available to Nigerian Pilot in
Abuja, quoted Mrs. Mailafia as saying that
“considering the cross cutting nature of the
environment sector, the ministry intends
to utilise the Public Private Partnership,
PPP, platform to execute projects in
critical areas such as climate change, waste
management, drought and desertification
amelioration, and air quality”.
The minister according to the statement
said this while briefing the leadership
and members of the National Working
Committee of the Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP, at the party’s national
headquarters in Abuja.
She explained that projects are to be
implemented in scrap metal recycling
plants, material recovery facilities
construction of conveniences in public
places, desert to food programme, clean
energy production, control of vehicular
emission.
Futhermore, Mailafia told the
committee that under the leadership
of President Goodluck Jonathan, the
ministry has executed 103 Erosion
and Flood control projects nationwide,
provided for the execution of 147
numbers projects in 2013 and the
commissioning of 83 numbers Erosion
and flood control projects by December
2013.
Also the ministry had increased the
number of Flood early warning Systems
and alerts in the country, and the Great
Green Wall programme had commenced
in the country, with an emphasis on
community ownership and propulsion
to ensure enhanced livelihoods for the
shelter belt communities, the minster
noted.
She announced that a wide variety of
economic trees and cottage industries
will be put in place under the Great
Green Wall programme
