Less than two weeks after
the governors of Benue
State, Dr Gabriel Suswam
and his Nasarawa State
counterpart, Tanko Almakura,
met in Lafia to
find lasting solution to the
invasion on Tiv farmers by
Fulani herdsmen, some persons
suspected to be Fulani
herdsmen have allegedly
killed eight persons in a
fresh attack on two villages
in Agatu Local Government
Area of Benue State.
The lawmaker representing
Agatu constituency in
the tight security that had
been beefed up by governments
of the two states.
“They changed their normal
route which is the riverine
border of Nasarawa
to now enter through Ochichi
viilage of Apa. I believe
they changed their position
because of the recent peace
initiative brokered between
the two states that now keep
strict surveillance in their
domain”, Audu stressed.
Similarly, the immediate
past chairman of Agatu Local
Council, Audu Momoh
confirmed that the attack
was carried on Ochologologthe
state House of Assembly,
Sule Audu alleged that
the suspected herdsmen invaded
two villages at about
11am on Sunday armed
with dangerous weapons
which they used to unleash
terrors on their victims.
“They went on rampage as
they set several houses on
fire and killed eight people”.
Audu explained further
that the attackers gained
entry through the neigbouring
Ochichi village in
Apa local government since
they could not pass through
their usual riverine border
of Nasarawa state due to
wu and Enogaje villages yesterday
morning.
Momoh, however, said that
no lives were lost but admitted
that houses including
properties were completely
razed down in what he described
as “unprovoked attack”
since there was no
basis for the suspected
herders to have invaded the
area.
When contacted, the
Benue State police spokesman,
DSP Daniel Ezeala
said he was yet to get information
about the fresh attacks
at the time of sending
this report.
