Borno State Government is to establish a special camp for Pregnant Internally Displaced Women, PIDW.
Speaking to journalists on the need to take special care of such women, Chairman of Borno State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Mallam Grema Terab disclosed that there were at present over 300 pregnant women in 21 camps for IDPs scattered all over Maiduguri, the state capital.
Terab said the special needs of pregnant women made it important for a different camp with needed infrastructure and personnel made available for their care.
He said, arrangement had been concluded for the camp to be established at the newly built Legacy Estate.
He also revealed that the special camp will equally cater for the IDPs requiring counseling, especially those traumatized from their experience with the insurgents.
The SEMA boss, who recently called on the United Nations and other global humanitarian agencies, said the appeal had started yielding results as many world renowned bodies had approached them with aids.
He disclosed that UNICEF had come knocking with assistance for children and pupils at the camps, the International Committee of Red Cross, ICRC, and Doctors without Borders have equally been supportive.
He however appealed to the federal government to open the Maiduguri International Airport to commercial flight, insisting that the closure of the airport has made it impossible for the state to access the world and by extension aids from international donor agencies.
He said: “It is unfortunate that the Maiduguri airport remains closed for a year now and this has virtually closed the town and our people to aids from across the globe.
“I would want to appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to look into this and ensure that the airport is open very soon.”
