The trial of persons who allegedly killed four students of the University of Port Harcourt in Aluu – Lloyd, Tekena, Ugonna and Chidiaka – has been adjourned till Thursday, July 9, 2015.
The trial of killers the Aluu four had been on for up to three years and was being made worse by the crisis in the Rivers State Judiciary, which lasted for about a year.
Speaking on the adjournment of the matter, a lawyer, Barrister Bartholomew Amadi, noted that the postponement of the case was occasioned by the assignments being handled by the acting Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daisy Okocha, whom he stated was engaged to release some prisoners being held in prison custody, through the prerogative of mercy for the purpose of decongesting the prisons.
Barrister Amadi stated that it was uncustomary for the accused to be brought to court under such circumstance and be allowed to wait for the trial Judge who was on another assignment in the state, because of the security implication.
But the trial of the Aluu four killing which has continued to generate interest among residents of the state, against the backdrop of delay in the trial of the accused, will now hold Thursday, July 9, 2015, following the commencement of court session.
It will be recalled that on Friday, October 5, 2012, four students of Uniport were murdered after being tortured to death before being set ablaze in Aluu Community in Ikwerre local government area of Rivers State, for allegedly stealing phones and laptops from an out-campus hostel.
The murdered students were identified as Lloyd, Tekena, Ugonna and Chidiaka.
