NUJ president advises journalists to take up life insurance

The President of Nigerian Union of Journalists, Mohammed Garba has called on journalists to take advantage of the NUJ insurance scheme to help mitigate the hazards involved in practicing journalism in Nigeria. He stated this yesterday when he received the Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, who paid a condolence visit to the leadership of NUJ in Abuja, over the unfortunate death of three Journalists from the South West Chapels of the Union. He said that the death of the journalists has strengthened his conviction on the need for journalists to be insured because the insurance would help to provide sucour for the family of the diseased. Nebo on his part said that the prompt condolence visit is informed by the indispensible role of journalists as professionals in the nation’s history and development. He acknowledged the immeasurable supports of practitioners especially those on specialized beat like Energy, in the dissemination of factual often technical information about the power sector which, sometimes is misunderstood by laymen. He also said that journalists have paid very useful role in “capturing in clear terms, enormous challenges, he met on ground on assumption of duty. Nebo also expressed satisfaction with the level of dedication to duty, punctuality to assignment and thorough understanding of the power sector as exhibited by Energy Correspondents in particular. He tasked the NUJ family to take heart, while appreciating the event as an act of God, which should make the leadership offer more patriotic services to the nation. “May the God Lord grant these compatriots eternal rest, and to those still in the hospital, he prayed for their quick recovery” he said. It would be recalled that three Journalists were involved in a ghastly motor accident in Ilesa, Osun State, on their return from their return after an official engagement in Abuja.
