The first elected chairman of Kano State chapter of Nigeria Institute of Public Relations has warned against corruption of power by the leadership of the chapter in the state.
Speaking at the chapter’s annual general meeting in Kano, Prince Ajayi Memaiyatan, who is also a fellow of the institute, advised members to protect their professional reputation by upholding the system.
He wondered why the annual audited financial report of December 2011 did not reflect the income and expenditure of the national AGM hosted by the chapter.
Prince Memaiyatan disclosed that a total of more than N6 million was collected from the public as donation when the estimate for hosting after visualisation, evaluation and execution was put at N2.4 million, but the amount was not reflected in the account.
He said the method of election which returned the former executive, was a food for thought and worrisome because due process and resolutions were flouted.
Prince Memaiyatan implored the new executive to institute an annual lecture in memory of Alhaji Sabo Sarki Mohammed, who was the former state vice chairman of the chapter and the first national president of the institute to come from the North.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Sule Ya’u Sule, the chapter chairman and former director of press for Kano State governor, Mal. Ibrahim Shekarau, said public lectures, media campaign, annual awards, visits increased Kano State membership by 70 per cent.
He said the national AGM was hosted by the chapter under a special committee while delegates were sent to the national conference of Abuja in 2012 where he was inducted as a fellow of the institute.
According to Mallam Sule, the achievements of the chapter include: the publication of membership directory and a book on the roundtable development lectures organised by the chapter.
The chairman of the electoral committee, Mallam Shehu Minjibir, who is a mass communication lecturer at Bayero University Kano, said the former executive were returned despite admission of late entries because there was nobody to oppose them.
Mal. Abba Dandago, member of the national council of NIPR and the main speaker of the conference advised practitioners to be trustworthy and team players.
