Ekiti State Government has promised to initiate the process for the creation of more local governments from the existing sixteen local government councils before the expiration of its tenure in 2014.

Governor Kayode Fayemi, made the statement in Aramoko Ekiti, headquarters of Ekiti west local government yesterday during a tour of all communities in the state.

According to the governor, some of the local government councils in the state are too large to remain as one, saying this would bring development to all sections across the state to meet the administration’s commitment to stamp out poverty in the State.

Fayemi, promised that he would soon inaugurate a committee that would harmonise all the memoranda from intending local governments and towns to effect the creation of the proposed councils.

He also reiterated his commitment to create a new council from the present Ekiti West local government   during his visit to other towns, which include: Ido-Ile, Okemesi, Erinjiyan, Ikogosi and Ipole Iloro Ekiti.

Fayemi, who  was responding to the demands from each of the towns, most especially  the request made by  Alara of Aramoko, Oba Olu Adeyemi and  his counterpart from Okemesi Ekiti, Oba Gbadebo Adedeji, who insisted  that the expanse of the council is impeding progress  and development.

He said, “We have pledged that we are going to create more local governments before the expiration of our tenure. We have not deviated from this promise. We will soon inaugurate a Committee that would consider the memos that would be raised from the interested councils and towns.”

“Creation of new Local Governments is a matter that must be looked at critically because development at the grassroots is a policy that must be pursued with vigour and seriousness. So, we will soon set machinery in motion to actualise this dream,” he said.
