Social workers want FG to declare state of emergency on unemployment

Sequel to the deaths of Nigerians last Saturday during the test conducted by the Nigeria Immigration Service where about 30 Nigerians died nationwide, the National Association of Social Workers, NASOW, yesterday called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on the issue of unemployment in the country.

National President of the Association, Olawale Kolawole Nathaniel stated this in a statement issued in commemoration of World Social Work day which was marked yesterday.

He said “In tandem with the theme, I am calling on governments at all levels to take urgent measures towards addressing such problems as poverty and unemployment, corruption, indiscipline, lawlessness and other related social vices.’’

Nathaniel pointed out that the event is a day set aside every March by International Federation of Social Workers, IFSW, to celebrate World Social Work Day by all social workers all over the globe.

‘‘The World Social Work day is the annual opportunity to advance social work perspective in political systems that affect the well-being of people and celebrate the social work profession’s contribution to societies. This year’s theme is “Social and Economic Crisis – Social Work Solutions.”

Meanwhile, NASOW has called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the Bill for Act to regulate Social Work practice in the country and establish Nigerian Institute of Social Work.
