Professor Attahiru Jega, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC yesterday charged Resident Electoral Commissions, RECs, to build confidence in the electoral system in their various states ahead of 2015 general elections, just as they gear up for the gubernatorial elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
Jega who gave this charge yesterday in Abuja during the 2014 first quarterly meeting with RECs said all RECs should sensitise stakeholders to mobilise participation in the electoral process.
“I wish to call upon you all (RECs) to give more attention to utilising available opportunities to strengthen relations with all categories of stakeholders in your various states, especially agencies and political parties. The objective is to provide information and sensitisation in order to mobilise more effective participation in the electoral process”, Jega said.
The chairman of the electoral body stressed that the commission was committed to ensuring that they work with the RECs in their various states to “provide all that it would be required to deliver free, fair, credible and peaceful elections”.
He further urged them to remain focused at all times and create a level playing field for all parties and candidates.
On the forth coming governorship elections, Jega noted: “All eyes are now on Ekiti and Osun where the governorship elections will take place this year”, adding that the continued voter registration, CVR, and the permanent voters cards, PVCs in the states were successfully conducted and that they were remarkable improvements on the previous ones and that they have leant lessons from the exercise to improve their experience.
