Programme Manager of Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme, Dr Ilyasu Gital, has said most farmers in the state have heeded to his advice to commence planting early this cropping season.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN in Bauchi on Thursday, Gital said the advice was a sequel to the predictions of Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NIMET that there would be early rains this year that would last a short period.
Consequently, he said that most farmers in the state had tilled their lands and planted their crops.
“It is heartwarming that farmers adhere to the advice. This is a positive development,” he said.
The manager then urged farmers to be consulting experts for advice on the proper measures to take to avoid incurring a loss.
Gital also said that research had indicated the probability of recording bumper harvest this year, adding that there might not be serious flooding in the state.
Some farmers interviewed said the advice to commence planting early, was passed to them by their colleagues, while others said they heard it over the radio.
Alhaji Faruk Maisamari of Durum village on the outskirt of Bauchi metropolis, said he heard Gital on the radio advising that they plant early.
“That is why immediately a heavy downpour was recorded on Tuesday, I went to my farm and commenced planting.
“You know Gital is an expert in this field and if research has shown that we should plant early, I think we should heed his advice and do so,” he said. NAN
