Third Mainland Bridge: LASTMA goes tough on indiscriminate packing

Henceforth, motorists who stop to either pick or drop passengers on the Third Mainland Bridge axis would have themselves to blame as the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, said those indiscriminate packings were responsible for frequent traffic gridlock experienced by motorists and commuters on the highway.

Putting the clampdown in perspective, LASTMA said it is declaring zero tolerance for motorists, most especially company staff buses and private cars that park, pick or drop passengers at will along the Third Mainland Bridge, particularly in Alapere and Lagos Island respectively with effect from Monday, July 15, 2013.

This, the traffic management authority said, would promote good usage of road network, reduce traffic congestion and restore sanity on Iyana Oworo axis and its environs.

“The volume of traffic gridlock on that axis is caused by private cars, staff buses who park and pick pedestrians or their colleagues on the highway  We are set to clamp down on any motorists who park recklessly on the high way, particularly in Iyana-Oworo axis.”

The agency stressed further that motorists should move towards the Iyana Oworo layby, which is primarily designed for picking and dropping of passengers, noting that “LASTMA will no longer tolerate reckless parking on the highway. If we all do what is right, there is no way such traffic congestion will be that much.”

Edu, however, stressed that it became imperative for the agency to enforce law and order on the axis.
