“I am confident that General Buhari and other presidential candidates will attend the debate, considering the special place the university holds in the society. It’s a place where they generate ideas, ideas that relate to good governance.
“We want Nigerians to know what the candidates are going to do for Nigerians when they come into office, through the university’s organised debate,” he said.
Abugu further stated: “We are most credible, we are most independent and we are a melting pot of knowledge, and so if you see the list of membership of the committee, they are eminent professors that can stand their test of time anywhere in the world.
“The vice chancellor has selected the best hands in the university to ensure they provide a credible platform ever, and so I am confident that no party or presidential candidate would hear about our platform that would not jump to it. I am confident that all of them will attend,” he added.
He stated that the University of Abuja remained the first in Africa to have contemplated and intended to organise such debate, adding that the idea was in line with the international best practice, citing the United States of America.
Earlier while addressing journalists, Abugu informed that the decision to embark on the debate “is to discharge the patriotic burden upon us as a catalyst for stimulation, generation, exchange and dissemination of ideas, issues and responsive governance”.
